Conferences Relevant for Luminescence Dating

Apart from wide application in geology and sediment dating, optically stimulated luminescence dating OSL dating can also be employed to date architectural structures via the dating of construction mortars. Many of these authors stated a difficulty with partial bleaching for a majority of tested samples which makes it impossible to date this kind of material by a standard single aliquot technique, consisting in the analyses of tens or hundreds of grains together. Thanks to relatively recent developments of single grain attachments that are becoming a more and more frequently used tool for OSL analyses in recent years, the problem of age over-estimation arising from partial bleaching can be overcome. SG-OSL analyses of 35 mortar samples originating from five different monuments will be compared. The objective is to discuss all the aspects from the sample preparation via specificities of the measurement protocol and data evaluation to the age estimation, thereby underlining the importance of material characterization prior to the SG-OSL analysis. Finally, we will attempt to suggest a convenient analytical protocol for dating mortars by SG-OSL based on currently available analytical methods, and we will assess current advancements as well as persistent limitations. The mortar samples presented in this paper come from the monuments that were all independently dated by other physical archeomagnetism or radiocarbon dating or archaeological and historical approaches. The aim of the study was to have diversified samples regarding age and geological origin, to look into differences between them and thence to draw more general conclusions concerning their dating potential. For more details about reference dates, the reader is referred to Lanos and Dufresne for Antibes, to Hourcade and Lanos and Dufresne for Palais-Gallien, to Michel for Saint Seurin, to Hourcade and Maurin and Lanos and Dufresne for Chassenon, to Fischer for Basel and to Hueglin for mortar mixers. The results of SG-OSL dating of the last three above mentioned archaeological sites Chassenon, Basel and Swiss mortar mixers have not been published separately before and are not part of any publication in preparation.

Luminescence dating provided the first direct and independent evidence that anatom humans had a Luminescence. Dating Laboratory, University of Durham.

Although the type site for the LGM glaciation of Britain is on the Holderness coast at Dimlington, very poor chronological control is otherwise available for the pattern of advance and recession by the North Sea Lobe NSL , the major outlet of the British-Irish Ice Sheet whose potentially dynamic and pulsed behaviour has been the subject of considerable speculation due to limited chronological control on marginal oscillations. Not only the dynamics but also the configuration of this large outlet of the BIIS are poorly understood, and existing palaeoglaciological reconstructions depict a glaciologically improbable configuration, with east coast-parallel flow that requires a buttressing ice mass in the North Sea despite the lack of unequivocal evidence for such a shelf-based ice mass1,2.

An alternative scenario is that the forebulge of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet could have confined the flow of the NSL3, although this remains untested. Our understanding is hampered by a lack of knowledge of offshore sediment-landform assemblages and a dearth of dates on their emplacement. Ice flow directional indicators reveal a clear pattern of onshore, radial flow by the western margin of the NSL, which deposited prominent till sheets, moraines and ice-dammed lake sediments, but offshore limits are related only tentatively to the extent of the weakly chronologically constrained Bolders Bank Formation4, and marginal recession patterns and rates are unknown.

Because of the late marine inundation of the North Sea during immediate deglaciation, there is no glacimarine or glacioisostatic record of ice sheet recession along the eastern England coast, but the region was subject to glacial loading nonetheless and therefore would have been extensively flooded by proglacial lake waters, as evidenced by the extensive glacilacustrine sediments in the onshore stratigraphies.

The chronology of extent and depth changes and potentially significant role of this lake in forcing ice sheet recession is entirely unknown. In the Holderness type area for the last glaciation, two radiocarbon dates produced in the s on subtill organics have recently been supplemented by OSL dates on stratified glacifluvial and glacilacustrine sediments between two overlying tills, indicating two phases of ice advance at The first phase of advance is coincident with climate warming in the Greenland icecore record, whereas the second coincides with cooling but dates to a time when the BIIS had retreated back to its dispersal centres, thereby indicating that the whole eastern sector of the BIIS was oscillating out of temporal sequence with the rest of the ice sheet.

The two onshore advance phases of the North Sea Lobe, which are manifest in other stratigraphies further north such as Sandsend near Whitby, have therefore been related to ice stream marginal responses to internal ice sheet dynamics, rather than climatic forcing.

Optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating has been applied to determine the burial age of sediment horizons within a sequence containing Lower Palaeolithic artefacts on an upland site associated with a solution feature doline at West Cliffe, located on the North Downs in Kent, UK. A detailed examination of the uniformity of the distribution of radionuclide sources in the sampled volumes was also performed and this included the application of a spatially-resolved technique for beta dose rate measurement.

The OSL ages, obtained for the burial of brickearth positioned stratigraphically below and above a clay and flint clast layer containing the artefacts and debitage, place the deposition of the artefacts to between ca and 80 ka ago. If displacement occurred on other upland sites this finding has important implications for establishing the timing of hominin use of the upland areas which, beyond broad attribution to Lower or Middle Palaeolithic origin, is uncertain and similar doubts apply to the interpretation of the environments that prevailed.

The Luminescence Dating and Dosimetry Laboratory is developing new techniques for application to the dating of artefacts and deposits from sites that range widely in terms of chronological period, geographic location and material type. Recent work as focused on optically stimulated luminescence OSL techniques, in particular a novel experimental approach to the measurement of single grain OSL.

A study produced, for the first time, absolute dates for a range of brick stupas located within the hinterland of Anuradhapura , contributing to the further development of a brick monument chronology for the region. Ongoing work is examining whether unfired clay bricks from various sites can be dated accurately. OSL techniques are being applied to date sediment sequences in stratigraphic contexts associated with irrigation systems.

In the absence of suitable organic samples for C dating, these systems are very difficult to date.

Access to water resources was vital for the survival of ancient peoples inhabiting arid landscapes. In such regions, surface water quickly becomes unavailable through evaporation or infiltration into the subsurface. To gain access to the subterranean water supply required new and innovative techniques. One example of this innovation was the development of the qanat: an underground channel.

Through the construction of qanats, the groundwater supply could be unlocked and utilised for irrigation and consumption. Along the path to its final destination, a number of vertical shafts are dug into the horizontal tunnel to: 1 allow for better oxygen supply to the workers; 2 easily remove the excavated material; and 3 provide ease of access during routine maintenance of the tunnel. Once the qanat is completed, the water flows by gravity along the tunnel to a collection pond where it can then be redistributed for irrigation purposes.

The dating of the construction of qanat systems, however, is rather difficult to pin down. In some instances, historical documentation or association with nearby settlements can help shed light on the age of construction.

Caveat : The editor was brave enough to ask me to write a report on a conference that I had organized. The report may not entirely reflect what the delegates experienced! About 50 papers were presented, mostly by British workers, but with contributions from Greece, Germany, Italy and Russia. There were 5 oral sessions covering Technology, Materials Analysis and Provenance 4 papers , Biochemical Studies 15 papers , Environmental Studies 10 papers , Geoarchaeology 10 papers , Chronological Studies 4 papers , together with 2 keynote addresses and a poster session 7 papers.

In comparison to past conferences in the series there was a remarkable emphasis on biological topics, derived entirely from the subjects of submitted papers, rather than due to any choice of the organizers. In the space available I cannot possibly do justice to all the excellent papers presented, so I will pick out some of the highlights for me personally, which are biased by my interests and also by the very fact that the organizer has to miss papers in order to organize things!
